Energy & Emissions

Energy and emissions modelling. From compliance assessments to decarbonisation planning.

BASIX, Section J, NatHERS, GHG inventories and embodied carbon assessments across Australia. Delivered by a sustainability engineer with a decade of experience having delivered this work for Australia's leading listed property and construction groups.

Energy and emissions data is now expected, not optional

Regulatory requirements. Client mandates. Mandatory disclosures.

BASIX, Section J and NatHERS assessments are regulatory requirements for development approvals. GHG inventories and emissions data are increasingly mandatory for organisations responding to tenders, meeting client ESG requirements and preparing for mandatory climate disclosures.

This work is delivered by a sustainability engineer with a decade of experience across Australia's leading listed property and construction groups. Technical outputs that are accurate, audit-ready and built to hold up under scrutiny.

Energy and emissions modelling done properly

Four service areas.

From development approvals through to decarbonisation planning, the modelling is technically rigorous and grounded in Australian standards, climate data and real project experience.

01 / Compliance Modelling
Energy compliance modelling
BASIX, Section J and NatHERS assessments for residential and commercial projects. Modelling that meets compliance requirements and informs better design decisions, not just a certificate at the end.
BASIX assessments for residential development applications
NatHERS thermal comfort and energy ratings
Section J compliance reports (NCC Volume One)
Early-stage design advice to avoid costly late changes
Coordination with architects and mechanical engineers
02 / GHG Reporting
GHG inventory and emissions reporting
Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas inventories built to GHG Protocol standards. Technically defensible data for regulatory submissions, client reporting and decarbonisation planning.
Scope 1, 2 and 3 inventory development (GHG Protocol aligned)
NGERS-aligned reporting where applicable
Emissions baseline establishment and year-on-year tracking
Supply chain and value chain emissions (Scope 3)
Reporting for tenders, ESG disclosures and regulatory submissions
03 / Embodied Carbon
Embodied carbon assessments
Embodied carbon modelling for buildings and infrastructure projects. Rigorous upfront carbon data that supports design decisions and tender responses, produced by an engineer who knows how the numbers are used in practice.
Upfront embodied carbon modelling for new builds and major refurbishments
Supply chain carbon data collection and analysis
Embodied carbon reporting for tenders and client submissions
Alignment with industry benchmarks and reduction targets
04 / Decarbonisation
Decarbonisation planning
Carbon reduction pathways for organisations ready to move beyond measurement. Grounded in your actual emissions data, not generic targets, and built to hold up under client, investor and regulatory scrutiny.
Emissions baseline assessment and target setting
Decarbonisation roadmaps for individual assets and whole organisations
Interim milestone development and progress tracking
Alignment with science-based and industry-recognised pathways
Decarbonisation narrative for investor, board and regulatory reporting

Director, Environment & Sustainability
Lead practitioner

Hien has over 10 years of experience spanning asset management, project delivery and corporate sustainability consulting across Australia's built environment. He has worked across both project-scale and corporate sustainability engagements, including energy and emissions modelling for major infrastructure projects such as Barangaroo and Sydney Metro, and physical climate risk, transition risk and decarbonisation programs for Australia's leading listed property and construction groups.

That breadth of experience, from on-the-ground project delivery to board-level sustainability strategy, is what clients engage when they work with Equilibrium.

How we work

Three ways to engage.

Energy and emissions engagements are led by Hien directly, with the broader Equilibrium practice supporting wherever the work intersects with management systems, data, software or compliance. Available as a project engagement, a managed service, or on-demand specialist work.

Build Project Engagement
Defined scope, defined outcome
BASIX, Section J and NatHERS assessments. GHG inventory build. Embodied carbon assessment. Decarbonisation roadmap. Scoped and priced before work starts.
Run Managed Service
Ongoing emissions tracking
Year-on-year inventory updates, decarbonisation pathway monitoring, ongoing regulatory and client reporting. Monthly retained scope with consistent senior practitioner delivery.
Support Specialist On-Demand
Single assessments and reviews
Individual assessments, tender support, peer review of existing modelling, advisory hours. Single deliverables billed per engagement, no ongoing commitment required.

Need a BASIX, Section J or GHG inventory for a project or tender?

We will scope the assessment, confirm what is required and provide a fixed price before any work starts. No cost to start the conversation.
